Glossary: Locus of Control

Locus of control is a psychological concept that literally means; the place that the control in their life comes from. It describes an individual’s belief around their perceived agency over the outcome of an event in their life – good or bad – and how much responsibility they are willing to take for their own actions.

People with an internal locus of control attribute outcomes in their life to their own efforts and abilities. People with an external locus of control, attribute their success or failure to things outside their control. They are more likely to experience anxiety and depression as they feel they are not an agent in their own experience; thus have less control over outcomes in their lives. They can have a negative fatalistic approach, “I am the victim of my environment” or “You made me do it, you know how I get… What did you expect?”

When you internalise your locus of control, you have the power to control the outcome! You can determine your own destiny. That doesn’t always mean you can control the situation, just your reaction to it… and that is a great way to feel less anxious about this chaotic COVID world we’re all living in now.
