How to get Medicare supported psychology sessions

Follow these simple steps below to get started.

  1. Choose the inlyfe Clinician you would like to speak to.
  2. Talk to your GP and discuss your concerns. If eligible, you will be given a mental health care plan (MHCP).
  3. Select the clinician you would like to see from the CHOOSE YOUR CLINICIAN page and make a booking!

What is a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and why do I need one?

A Mental Health Care Plan is how the government is supporting your individual mental health needs; once you pay to see a registered psychologist, they will rebate you some of the money for the session, just like seeing a doctor or specialist. The MHCP is a way of tracking your progress through a GP and making sure you are getting the Mental Health Care you deserve; it holds the GP and Psychologist accountable.

How many sessions do I get?

20 (one hour) rebated sessions within the calendar year. This is in total, so it can be from different psychologists, but you get 20 rebated sessions per calendar year. You can always pay full fee and attend as many sessions as you like; but why not let your taxes help you?

How much do I get back?

You will need to pay for your session first when booking, but you will get the rebate back within a few days of your session.

  • General Psychologist rebate is $87.45
  • Clinical Psychologist rebate is $128.40

Where do I get a MHCP from?

Any Doctor, your local General Practitioner (GP) at any medical centre or convenient location.

What do I need to do to get one?

  • Make an appointment and tell the GP that you would like a Mental Health Care Plan to see a psychologist.
  • They will ask a few questions about what is going on for you and may get you to fill out a K10 (10 questions), or DASS-21 (21 questions) questionnaire that is a quick general mental health assessment.
  • The GP may recommend someone for you to see, but you are free to choose or nominate whoever you want. Finding a psychologist is a very personal choice and you may have been agonizing over it for some time. If you haven't decided which GP you want yo use yet you can nominate "inlyfe Psychology" you can choose the most appropriate clinician later.
  • If you have already chosen one of the inlyfe psychologist - tell the GP that you have found a clinician that you would like to see on inlyfe and that telehealth is your preferred option. If they have any questions, direct them to this website or give them this email: admin@inlyfe.co

Then what?

You will receive a Referral Letter and a Mental Health Care Plan. The referral letter is to your new psychologist to let them know what you have already told them. The MHCP is more about the billing side of things and encourages continuation of care between your GP and psychologist.

When do I need to renew my MHCP?

When you have used up the number of sessions on your current plan.

Your initial plan will be 6 sessions, if you feel like you need more sessions after that, you will be entitled to 4 more after a quick review by your GP, they will need to provide a follow-up MHCP at this stage, after those additional session have been attended, you are entitled to 10 more under the governments “Pandemic Scheme” after another review by your GP. (Totalling 20 sessions per calendar year).
